Tamil Nadu will have at least 400 more MBBS seats for the 2020-21 medical admissions.

Tamil Nadu CM lays foundation for one more government medical college two weeks before, 11 new institutions would bring 1,650 more seats, 150 per college by next year in tamil nadu

Panimalar Medical College Hospital and Research Institute, a self-financing medical college affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University, has been permitted to start MBBS course with 150 seats afrom this academic year.

 The Medical Council of India website also shows 100 additional seats for “Meenakshi Medical College Hospital And Research Institute” and “Saveetha Medical College in Kancheepuram”.

In 2017-18 and 2019-20, new government medical colleges were inaugurated at Pudukottai and Karur with 150 MBBS seats each.

Presently, Tamil Nadu has 5,550 MBBS seats,

  • 3,600 in the government
  • 1,950 in private sector colleges and with the fresh 1,600 plus additions

The total number of seats would go up to 7,200 by next academic year. As on date, there are 25 government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu with the Madras Medical College, which is among the oldest and largest medical institutions in India, followed by The Stanley Government Medical College Hospital which is more than 200-years old set up in 1938.
